Breathe plastic-free air

Where do microplastics come from?

Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5 mm in size. They hide in cosmetics and toiletries, they can even be found in toothpaste. The tiny particles in the air in our homes also come from fragmentation of plastic objects such as furniture, toys, tupper ware, plastics bags, building materials and paints. Microplastic fibres are also released from synthetic clothes and textiles in home furnishings. Recent research shows that the majority of microplastics in our bodies actually come from the air we breathe – not from drinking bottled water, or eating fish from polluted oceans.

How do microplastics affect me?

Because of their small size, microplastics can be inhaled and harm our lungs and respiratory system. Children are at higher risk as their lungs are still under development and because toddlers crawl on the floor, where microplastics gather in the form of dust. Children also breathe faster and inhale more air in relation to their body weight, which makes them more vulnerable to polluted air in general.

Blueair removes microplastics from your indoor air

All Blueair air purifiers, including our face masks and in-car purifiers, remove microplastics from the air. Blueair air purifiers of course also remove pollen, smoke, dust, mold, bacteria, viruses and VOCs found in cleaning products. Blueair’s air purifiers are tested by independent laboratories and have received best-in-class ranking. Because an air purifier from Blueair removes airborne particles down to 0,1 micrometer in size*, they are guaranteed to eliminate microplastics from your indoor air.

*Blueair’s HEPASilentTM technology captures 99.97% of all airbourne particles down to 0.1 micron in size.

Top tips for reducing plastics in your air at home

  • Plastic microbeads are added to some cosmetic cleansers. As many as 100,000 can be flushed down the drain during a shower. Use a brand without microplastics; Unilever ended their use of microbeads in 2015.
  • 1,600 plastic microfibres can be produced every time a single synthetic garment is washed. Choose sustainable, natural fibre clothing and textiles in home furnishings.
  • Drink filtered tap water instead or bottled water to reduce the number of plastic objects entering your home. Avoid plastic straws.
  • Ensure good ventilation in your home – the concentration of airborne plastics is found to be much higher in indoor than outdoor air.
  • Vacuum frequently as microplastics gather on the floor in the form of dust.
  • Reduce or remove carpets, which trap plastic fibres and particles.
  • Choose hardwood or ceramic tile floor – vinyl and linoleum flooring can release microplastics into the air.
  • Avoid plastic toys – opt for wood or natural rubber.
  • Put an air purifier in the rooms where you spend most of your time. All Blueair air purifiers for home and professional use remove airborne microplastics.

CADR stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate and is measured in Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM). It measures the performance of an air purifier and is an important feature consumers can use worldwide to compare different brands of air purifiers. The CADR is determined by AHAM and reflects how fast a unit removes airborne pollutants such as dust, pollen and tobacco smoke from a room by indicating how much 100% clean air is delivered. The higher the CADR, the faster is the unit able to filter the air in a particular room.
